The key thing to remember is that video production can be as flexible and cost effective as you need it to be. Whether you’re looking to make a film or an animated video, you don’t have to have a Hollywood style budget to get your message across.

In most cases, a shorter video results in high viewer retention, making it more likely to capture the viewer’s attention. The shorter video is usually more budget friendly too, so it’s a win-win!

The myth: “I won’t have the time to be a part of my own video project”.

Video production has become a lot more streamlined than it used to be. There’s a huge amount of tools to make each stage of the process quicker.

How many times can I promote my video?

The myth: “Video can be limiting, once you’ve used the video, you can’t show it again”. 

Reuse, recycle and repurpose – it works just the same with video!

There’s no harm in re-sharing a video, you don’t have to share it once and leave it at that. Many videos can also be repurposed and made into a new edit, giving a refreshed look and message from your original idea.

If you’re thinking of making a video in 2022, you’re going to want to stay ahead of the curve and follow the latest trends to make your message engaging and relevant. 

Video content is only getting bigger and every year more people are looking to it to grow. In fact, 93% of businesses landed a new customer after sharing a video on social media – staggering stuff. 

Plus, you can include drone and timelapse footage to really take your video to the next level. 

With that in mind, here’s the top trends to consider in 2022. 

Do I need subtitles on my video?

The short answer – YES! (Or at least, a subtitled version).

A significant amount of people watch videos with the sound off. 

Let’s say you’re travelling around without headphones, you’re probably not going to be blasting it out loud in public. It’s essential that you have a subtitled version for them.

Not only does it allow someone to engage with the video by reading the subtitles, it also makes it much more accessible to other members of your audience. 

Sure, there may be automatic caption options on some sites, though imagine if the captions were inaccurate or mis-translated to what is happening on the screen – nightmare! It’s much more unique to have your own personal captions, potentially even in your brand colours, to ensure it’s accurate, accessible and consistent all at once.

Plus, you don’t have to stop at those traditional white text in a black box, you have text appear anywhere over your video or even animate it!

How pre-production can shape your film project.

As a team, we love creating high quality film projects across multiple sectors all over the UK.

But these projects require time and focus to ensure they go smoothly.

A big part of this planning, the first step. That’s why in this blog we answer the question…

What is pre-production?

Pre-production is the planning process for your project.

This is the time to decide exactly how it will come together and it allows time for everyone to know exactly what’s involved and how we can work together to create it.

Essentially, pre-production is the stage of a project to decide the what, where, who, when and how of filming days.

What is on a pre-production checklist?

These are the typical things needed for the planning stages of your project:

However, the more time and focus that is put into these stages, the smoother the production will be overall.

Why is pre-production so important?

The planning of any project can shape the message you’re trying to get across.

These stages can often be overlooked, in favour of getting straight to the exciting moment that the cameras are rolling.

Whilst the filming stage is very exciting, hold your horses for now, there’s planning needed first! 

Whether you’re making a product video, a promotional video or even a TV quality advert, pre-production is a crucial part of any production and can shape your entire project, having a massive impact on the final product.

How can pre-production help my project? 

You wouldn’t start building a house without planning it first, would you?

How can I see the benefits of my planning work?

Here’s an example of how a storyboard can really come in handy, when planning what we will capture on our filming days.

How do I plan my perfect filming day?

Our head of film Amy Hill provides some useful advice to help ensure everything is as smooth as possible.

We want your time filming with us to go as smoothly as possible. Here are some of the things you’ll need to consider:

How much time is needed to make a film?

Our customers are sometimes unsure how much time is needed so we’ve broken it down for you to make it easier for you to plan:

Interview set ups:  they take about 30 to 45 minutes to set up before we start filming and, if possible, we ask for photos of room options to give us a heads up on how we light the interview. 

Interviewing: This is entirely dependent on the confidence of the interviewee but our average interview usually takes 15 to 30 minutes.

Packing down: What goes up must come down and it takes around 15 minutes to put everything away.

Covering footage: These are the clips that sit on top of interviews, often scenes that are seen as someone is talking. We usually like to spend about 30-60 minutes with contributors after their interview capturing relevant footage. However, this is a complicated process to allocate time and would need to be discussed per project. 

As well as these considerations, there are things for you to factor in such as time needed in case things don’t go completely to plan, travel time needed between locations as well as breaks/lunch for our crew. 

How do I prepare for an interview?

The other important thing you need to prepare for are the interviews themselves. Here are some top tips:

Don’t over plan your answers: usually a list of mental bullet points can help but memorising a full scripted answer is a hindrance and takes away any authenticity. 

Remember to put the question back into the answer: Most of the time the film will not feature the interviewer’s voice, therefore contributors will need to provide context to their answers. For example, what’s your favourite colour? My favourite colour is blue. This answer provides context when editing.

Interviews are not live: Remind contributors that mistakes / retakes are fine!

Don’t waffle: Short and sweet answers are usually the best, there’s no pressure to waffle.

How do you create a story using 2D character animation?

 

Character animation is a great option if you want your message to tell a story, with the addition of vibrant and dynamic characters that will keep your viewers engaged.

The characters can be anything from stickmen to beautifully detailed designs, plus there’s always the option to add voice and sound to bring that friendly human element to your product or service.

2D animation is perfect for storytelling because of its flexibility and wide range of stylistic possibilities. 

How do motion graphics make my ideas stand out?

Motion graphics focus less on the storytelling elements, but they can illustrate complex ideas visually. 

For example, Icons and graphs are sometimes hard to explain with words and still images, but if you want the bars in your graph to move, that’s motion graphics. Once converted into motion graphics your ideas can be cleared up perfectly

Motion graphics are best for outlining or emphasising facts and illustrating the point you’re trying to make. 

Why should you use typographical animation?

Typographic animation is a style of animation that is used effectively when professional voiceover is not an option and when the animation has to silently sell a message.

It can be shown fast or slow, working well with motion graphics to help viewers understand what you’re trying to say.

A text based video can be a more affordable way to create and publish, but it is equally effective in getting your message across. 

What are the benefits of 3D modelling?

This technique is very popular in the production of technical equipment because it allows you to make changes to the yet undeveloped product, significantly saving money on  its creation by reducing the likelihood of error. It is great to show how a product works or how it looks from the inside, such as a complex mechanism.

  • We’re out filming! There’s still plenty of time for us to capture the stores you need, following all the latest Covid safety guidelines. If people aren’t comfortable being filmed in person, we can record them over things like Zoom.
  • We can edit! So, if you have any photos or have captured any video footage, we can transform these into some truly excellent features.

How can your product benefit from a video?

It’s fast, informative,  effective and easy for your audience to understand.  A staggering 72% of customers would rather learn about a product by video before their purchase – and you probably do too!

Here is an example we created for Peterson Europe, who specialise in vehicle safety lighting.

Sometimes it’s difficult to demonstrate how your product works with a single picture. 

This is your chance to give a virtual tour to show off your product in ways a single picture never could. 

This example from Network Telecom shows how effective a product can be in the workplace and explains exactly how it works in animation form. 

3. Can film or animation show off my product in detail? 

Certain products, such as a fire alarm, may require a more in depth video to understand exactly how it works.

This example goes above, beyond and even inside the product itself to give a huge amount of detail to exactly how the product works.
