Director Pete Sims

"There's always a solution to find."

Our director Pete Sims takes some time out to give a few insights into his life as well as running the business:

1. Who is someone you admire, and why?

I have always looked up to my father. He started his own business as a civil engineer and with hard work was successful. This knowledge has added to the ongoing support I’ve had from my family while building 7video to where we are today.

2. Tell me three pet hates?

Bad manners

Bad customer service

3. What’s a typical day like for you?

With a young family it is usually an early start which helps get me focused for the day ahead. At 7video no day is the same. Either with client meetings, film shoots, editing, supporting the team or general admin tasks. But this is what I love about running a business.

4. Do you have any skills or talents that most people don’t know about?

I am a big shark enthusiast and have been lucky to dive with many different species including the Great White.

5. If you could be anywhere, where would you be?

Bora Bora.

6. Flashback to when you were 10 years old. What did you want to be when you grew up?

A pilot flying jumbo jets.

7.  If we went to ‘happy hour’, what would you order?

Long Island Ice Tea.

8. Finish this sentence. On Sunday mornings, you can usually find me…

Making pancakes with my children.

9. How do you want people to remember you?

A creative who loved to laugh and make others smile.

10. What do you think are the best skills that you bring to your job?

I am personable and understanding. I’ll always look for a solution to a problem and never give up.

11. Name three words that best describe you.

12. How do you think your colleagues would describe you?

As someone who is easy to talk to, supportive but does love a good moan.

13. What do you want to make sure you do before you die?

Visit Bora Bora and see that my children are happy.

14. What are your highlights or lowlights of your career so far?

Highlight is winning the Small Business of the Year award. Lowlight would be Covid.

15. What publications do you regularly read?

Local press, inside housing, The E Myth.

16. What are you happiest doing, when you’re not working?

Gardening and spending time with the family.

17. What are some causes you care about?

Charities – Parkinson’s UK.

18. What do you do with friends and family in your spare time?

Walking, bbqs, going out for meals and drinks.

19. What would be your personal motto?

Don’t take yourself too seriously and there’s always a solution to a problem.

Building the future with our apprentices

Apprenticeships are an incredible gateway to acquiring valuable skills and opportunities to learn in the work environment.

We’re so proud to be able to offer these things to our very own apprentices and we sat down with our three apprentices to find out what they have been up to, what they’ve learnt and their standout moments at 7video.

Animation and digital graphics apprentice – Callum

It’s great to be an apprentice within 7video.

From talking first hand to clients, to dealing with full projects, everyone sees you as who you are rather than looking at job titles and judging ability from this, which gives me confidence to strive to do better.

I have learnt more than I could have imagined, from editing software to learning how to lead animation projects. I feel like I am learning more every day.

For me the stand out moment has been the Christmas period at the office. Working to create our Christmas animation for our social media and creating festive content for our clients and friends, made the office a great place to work.

Moreover, taking the lead on the 7video Christmas animation was a stand out moment for me, I’m proud of what I created with the support of my team.

Animation and digital graphics apprentice – Cherise

My apprenticeship is educational and fun!

I’ve been able to work on many different projects, from going on film shoots one day to designing and animating characters the next – which is perfect for me as I want to absorb as many skills as possible.

I’ve learnt about working on different stages of animation, developing my skills in so many different types of software.

Everyone has their own areas of expertise and experience, there’s so much I’ve learnt from everyone!

One of the best parts is working on a live project from start to finish and being able to see my ideas, designs and animations being used by clients, as well as getting a really lovely review from them stands out for me! I’m really proud to have created some videos for The Movement Centre, based in the West Midlands, it’s a project I really enjoyed working on, alongside their team.
7video having the confidence in me to take on live projects is really encouraging.

I’m super grateful for the opportunity that I’ve been given doing an apprenticeship with 7video, and can’t wait to see where it will take me!

Digital marketing apprentice – Adam

You are part of the team through and through, anything you need or want to learn is just a question away, that’s what I love about being an apprentice at 7video.

I’ve been able to put my own ideas forward for how we do things, allowing so much freedom to devise plans and create content – which is amazing!

I’ve had so many opportunities to shadow the film and animation teams, which provides me with a fantastic opportunity to learn about the production process, which is useful for how I plan my digital content.

I don’t think I could ever choose just one stand out moment because I’ve had so many great opportunities with the team. I’ve joined the crew on filming days, attended training courses and events – every single one of those has been incredible and I’ll never forget them!

Emily finding her place at 7video

Emily has joined our team as part of her college industry work placement and we’re so excited to have her join to learn more about all that we do!

But, we also want to learn more about Emily, so she sat down with our digital marketing apprentice, Adam Corbett, to discuss all things past, present and future.

How did you become interested in the world of media?

Growing up, my parents would always take me to the cinema and they would also show me the films that they grew up watching, which I really enjoyed.

I also love comics and graphic novels, which I find easier because of my dyslexia. I want to be able to create my own media content that people can love as much as I do.

What have you been up to on your placement so far?

I have met and shadowed some of the team creating a product video, which I have really enjoyed. Finding out how they make videos is really interesting!

The team is really nice and answer any questions about what they are doing and how they do it.

What do you want to do in the future?

I would like to go to university and study something in the creative field, probably illustration, character design, concept art or film.

I would like to work in the comic and graphic novel industry and give people the same enjoyment of these that they have given me. It would be great to be able to have a physical copy of something that I have made.

Do you have a favourite film?

Some of my favourite films are The Shining, Birds of Prey and True Romance.

What are your hobbies outside of work?

I like skiing, reading, watching films and analysing them.

The big question: Pineapple on Pizza, yes or no?

Yes, a hundred percent yes!

What is your proudest achievement?

My proudest achievement would be achieving the highest grade in my geography GCSE, as my Mum is a geography teacher.

What’s your motto in life?

If it could be good, do it.

If you could have one super power, what would it be and why?

The power to warp reality would be cool. The Marvel character, Scarlet Witch, has it –  it’s an incredible power that can do so many cool things – it literally changes reality.

From all of our team, welcome Emily! Find out more about our team and what we do here.

Chris out walking

Chris takes his skills to new heights

Chris is no stranger to seeing stars and scaling the tallest peaks, now he’s taking all his experience and is looking to expand it and create more amazing video content with our 7video team!

Chris took a few minutes out of his busy schedule to chat with our digital marketing guru Adam Corbett:

What has been your experience leading up to joining 7video?

I have been working in the film and television industry for over a decade and have always loved the production process that comes with it.

It’s the idea of reacting to the ever-changing situations, or exploring more options to expand on filming ideas. It’s a huge part of why I continue to love working in video production.

Do you have a favourite film or TV show?

Lord of the Rings – from the very first time I saw it, it blew my mind. It won all those Oscars for a reason!

What are your hobbies outside of work?

I’m a huge fan of snowboarding, with my biggest trip taking place at Utah Park City in the US – just a little over 7,000 feet at its peak – so definitely a worthy challenge of my experience!

When I’m not flying down mountains on snowboards, I’m usually strolling along them with my Cockapoo, Archie – my trusty walking companion.

The big question: Pineapple on Pizza, yes or no?

Just… no. Don’t get me wrong, I like sweet things, but this just doesn’t work for me.

What is your proudest achievement?

Probably the opportunity to film Steven Speilberg at the Cannes Film Festival because he is the director who inspired me to become a filmmaker.

I met the man himself face-to-face as he was sneaking past the photographers, who were trying to capture him walking into his hotel, during the festival.

I noticed that whilst everyone else was arriving by limo, there was a man just walking along, drawing no attention to himself – It was Steven Speilberg!

He stopped in front of me and gave me a knowing smile. He then stepped past the photographers and inside the hotel, completely undetected – what a genius!

What’s your motto in life?

If you work hard you can achieve anything.

If you could have one super power, what would it be and why?

Teleportation/time travel so I can cut out those ridiculous car journeys, haha!

Something we can all relate to, I’m sure!

(If you ever do find that super power, it’s one of the top requests, please let us know, Chris!)

Welcome to the team!

Hard work plus passion equals success for Joe

Joe has been training for years to get to this moment. Now his hard work has paid off, and we’re proud to welcome him to 7video. In his blog, we find out more about our video producer’s journey to our team…

I would say that I’ve always been interested in film.

Naturally, as most kids, I consumed a lot of visual media. But I started to take a deeper interest in film and video production when I was at college. From that point on, I’ve never looked back.

When I’m not picking up my camera and going out for a drive somewhere to explore (see photos Joe has taken above), you’ll probably find me in the kitchen. I’ve really got back into cooking and even my own resident MasterChef gran admits I can make a top notch scotch egg.

Outside of the kitchen, I play football twice a week and hope I’ll be able to get back into the gym soon.

My proudest achievement – outside of securing my first full time position as a video producer at 7video – was when I wrapped production on my final year project at university which was based on the resurgence of bare-knuckle boxing in Britain.

Working on that project for well over a year, during the lockdown, was something I took a massive amount of pride in.

Question time

The big debate: Coffee or tea?

A tea man all the way, I’ve got too much energy for coffee!

Let’s say you’re given £1million, what’s on the shopping list?

I would definitely share a lot of that with my family and friends. They have always been there for me and without them, I wouldn’t be where I am today.

What is your motto in life?

Without trying to act like the next world leader, it would be something like ‘everything happens for a reason’ or ‘nothing in life is guaranteed’. It essentially allows you to live a bit more freely and take less for granted; you don’t know when life can turn upside down, as we’ve seen over the past year.

Wise words! Thank you for sharing your story with us and welcome to our team!

You can find out more about our crew here.

New horizons for client relationship manager Millie

If Millie Laundon’s not watching a classic chick flick, she would be transforming into someone else for the day. Find out other fascinating facts about our new client relationship manager in her blog:

After working as an internal account manager in the furniture industry in Northampton, I have recently relocated back to Shropshire where I’m originally from. I have missed the hilly walks and fresh country air and I am looking forward to going on long strolls and exploring the beautiful countryside (the photo at the top of this blog was taken by Millie).

What is your favorite film?

Mean Girls….does anymore need to be said? It is a classic chick flick. I also like to watch Friends on repeat! I love all comedies and have a soft spot for old school 80s cheesy films.

What is your proudest achievement?

When I graduated from university. In 2012 I graduated from the University of Northampton with a BA (hons) Textiles for Fashion degree. I loved exploring anything creative, and had the best three years exploring all things fashion and textiles, including digital print and screen printing.

Do you have any hobbies?

I love to bake! I love to bake brownies, cookies and cupcakes or anything sweet really!

I also love to design my own fabrics and play around with digital print design.

If you could have any superpower, what would it be?

To be able to morph into other people, like Mystique from X-Men –  she is pretty cool! I would love the chance to experience life through the eyes of others.

If you could meet anyone in the world, who would it be?

Kevin Bacon. I love the film Footloose (the original) and have always wanted to meet him.

Cherise and Callum

Getting animated with our new apprentices

Two new apprentices have joined the team and 7video’s Adam Corbett got to know them a little better:

We’re delighted to welcome Callum White and Cherry Harris as animation and graphic design apprentices and I sat down with them to find out everything from career ambitions to superpowers.

So, have you always been interested in animation?

Callum: I have always been passionate about animation and graphic design.

Having always excelled in subjects at school and college that are design based, ranging from product design to graphic communication, it was there I discovered how it can capture an audience, and that interested me.

Cherise: Yes! I watched a lot of animation tv shows and films growing up, and have always been curious about creating my own!

What are your hobbies outside of work?

Callum: My hobbies include gym and running. I try to combine the two at 6am every morning, which is questionably hard in winter. I also enjoy coffee, playing piano and listening to Frank Sinatra all at the same time – quite the interesting mix.

Cherise: I have a few: painting, drawing, travelling, hiking, sea swimming and dancing!

What is your proudest achievement?

Callum: I’d say my proudest achievement is being able to work within a job I have a huge passion for. This has always been a large goal of mine, and now I’m very happy to be a part of an animation and graphic design team.

Cherise: Graduating University, I’m really proud of that.

Pineapple on Pizza, yes or no?

Callum: No… Unfortunately not. It’s meat and cheese on a pizza for me. Nothing else.

Cherise: Yeeee why not

What’s your motto?

Callum: I believe that everything happens for a reason. I think people overlook this statement a lot, however if you actually look into it it’s amazing how much can be affected by one small decision.

Cherise: Yeeee why not

Do you have a favourite film or TV show?

Callum: Favourite Film is either Toy Story or Up. Both classics when it comes to bringing back nostalgia from my childhood. Favourite TV Show would have to be Game Of Thrones. Yes the ending is questionable, however it still struggles to be beaten.

Cherise: Tim Burton or Studio Ghibli films are great – I particularly like Big Fish and Ponyo!

I give you £1million, what’s on the shopping list?

Callum: Firstly, it would be a financial adviser, then followed by a decent car, an occasional shopping trip, and then finished off with a flat in the center of Shrewsbury. If there’s an excess it’s a Tango Ice Blast Machine.

Cherise: I would love to use the money to go travelling around the world, and have my own big art studio! I’d also love to help with conservation work – protecting endangered species and habitats across the world.

If you could have one super power, what would it be and why?

Callum: Super power for me is always going to be time travel. If I could go back to when music wasn’t ruined by afro beats and rap I would.

Cherise: I’d love to be able to have the abilities of a bird or a fish! Swimming or flying around the place

Thank you both for your time, it was great to speak to you and get to know more about our newest apprentices!
